SERI orientation and induction for new postgraduate students
In September 2018, SERI carried out orientation and induction for new postgraduate students. The program includes a broad range of information, skills and tools a postgraduate need to know. The first session was given by the SERI dean Prof Guang-Guo Ying, who provided an overview of SERI and its mission, values, and organizational structure. Then he presented a talk on “Things one should know about scientific research”, which includes research steps, how to get started, experimental design, how to do innovative research, and how to write up a paper, as well as some unwritten rules of postgraduate research.
SERI Lab Manager Dr Yousheng Liu presented a talk on “Laboratory Safety and Occupational Health”, followed by Presentations on “Literature Search and Endnote Software Use” by Dr Sisi Liu, and “Common Scientific Software and Tools ” by Dr Wenjun Shi. Later on in October, we will have more training courses such as “Environmental Data Analysis” by Dr Lixin Hu, “Environmental Sample Processing and Instrumental Analysis” by Dr Jianliang Zhao, “Basic Laboratory Skills in Microbiology” by Dr Liangying He and Dr Yijing Shi, and “English Paper Writing” by Prof Lingtian Xie and Changer Chen.
Recently SERI also conducted a series of equipment and instrument use training, established purchasing procedure and instrument booking system. All these training courses lay a good foundation for the new postgraduates in their coming research career, and also help facilitate effective operation of SERI laboratories.
